What to Bring to a Food Pantry

Short answer: It depends on the pantry. Some ask for a photo ID and proof of address. Others ask for nothing. The fastest way to know is to check the pantry’s page here, then call before you go.

Rules are different at every pantry

There is no single rule for every food pantry. Here are two real examples, so you can see how much they differ.

Franklin Food Pantry in Massachusetts asks new households to register with proof of where they live, like a utility bill, a lease or a car registration. It says it does not ask for proof of income.

Flagstaff Family Food Center in Arizona says an ID can speed things up but is not required. It checks income and address by asking you, not by looking at papers.

What is good to have with you

These are things that often help. They are not required everywhere.

  • A photo ID, if you have one.
  • A piece of mail with your name and address, like a bill or a lease.
  • Bags, boxes or a cart to carry food home.
  • If you are picking up for someone else, ask the pantry what they need. Some, like Flagstaff Family Food Center, use a form for this.

How to check before you go

  • Find the pantry on this site. Each listing shows "What to bring" when the pantry has said what it needs.
  • If it says "Not listed", call and ask.
  • Ask if you need an appointment. Some pantries only serve people who booked a time.
